You are going to tell me you have a disaster recovery copy, and you are right. There is a second server, it is in sync, the failover has been tested. I am not arguing with any of that. I am asking the one question your DR plan probably never answered. Where is the copy?
A spare server survives one machine dying. Disaster recovery survives the building.
If the answer is the same building, the same data centre, or the same cloud region as production, you do not have disaster recovery. You have a spare server. Those are different things. A spare server protects you when one machine dies. Disaster recovery protects you when the room the machine sits in catches fire, floods, loses power for a day, or sits inside a cloud region that has a bad afternoon. Geographic separation is the entire point. It is one of the quieter gaps we find on the estates we look at.
Here is how it happens, and none of it is anyone being careless. The DR copy went next to production because that was the rack with space. Replication runs faster over a short cable than a long one, so the second node landed in the same hall. The cloud setup defaulted to one region because that is what the wizard suggested and nobody changed it. Every step was reasonable. The result is two copies of your business that share a single fate.
So let me ask it the way the board should hear it. Is it unfair of me to ask whether your recovery plan survives a full day with the primary site dark, a power event, a flood, a fire, a regional outage? If both copies live in the same place, the honest answer is no. The disaster you bought DR to survive is the exact one it does not cover. Read that twice before someone reads it aloud after the fact.
This is not a hard thing to find out. It is a hard thing to find out at 2:39am, when the site is dark and someone asks where the other copy is and the answer is the same building. The information exists right now. The location of every copy of your data is knowable on a calm Tuesday, which is the only good time to learn it.
