A 20TB backup, brought back inside SLA

· Adrian Sullivan

A metropolitan transport agency ran a 20TB SQL Server database against a two-hour recovery objective. The backup took up to six hours.

The numbers did not meet, and the DBA team knew it. They had zero confidence they would make the objective in a real event. A backup you cannot restore in time is not really a backup — it is a hope.

We implemented database compression.

The database came down to 12TB. Backup and restore now both finish inside two hours, back within the SLA the agency had set.

You guys are amazing. I didn’t even know this was possible. — Susan, Senior DBA

A backup nobody has restored under time pressure is the most common risk we find. A free, read-only health check tells you where you really stand. No obligation.

Not sure who you need?

Tell us what is going on. A senior DBA reads every message and points you at the right next step, even when that is not us. A free read-only check will tell you whether this one is sitting in your estate.
